Uncover where people move to when leaving California

Today, Nick Fong, the founder and broker of Ronival Real Estate presents Scott Fuller, the founder of LeavingTheBayArea.com and leavingSoCal.com.  Also, Scott is a broker and recently he’s been helping others to move somewhere else.  So welcome to the latest episode of The Nick Fong PODCAST!

When making a decision to move, you need to ask yourself some questions.  The first set of questions are where to move to, within your own country or to another country, and what are you looking for if you move to another country.  After that, you must ask if you want to be near the ocean, in a picturesque town, or in a small or big city.  Continue reading to uncover the how to answer these and more.

Scott Fuller’s unique venture

Scott Fuller hasn’t seen Nick since before the pandemic in the fall of 2019, as he says in the video.  That means, it’s a good time to meet up and talk.  Regarding Scott’s unique venture, he assists people with selling their home in CA and buying their new house somewhere else.  Also, he helps them develop a great moving strategy along with logistics like transporting their stuff.

Where people go when they leave CA?

Scott launched LeavingTheBayArea.com and LeavingSoCal.com back  in 2015.  Since then, people from all over California have been asking him for advise on how to leave the state.  And now that the pandemic has been going on for years, people are more accustomed to living and working remotely.  This has really opened the door to living somewhere else – somewhere more attractive.

What destination attracts people leaving CA?

As people leave California to live in another state, they are typically looking for states with little to no income tax.  Therefore, states like Florida, Texas, Nevada and Tennessee are prime examples to move to, in order to save on income taxes.  But of course, that has made property values and cost-of-living rise in those states.

These days, people are looking to move out of the US when they leave California.  As such, they’re looking to move to Mexico, since it’s just to the south.  And, Mexico has many great options like Cabo, where Americans love to live and thrive.  Also, Costa Rica and a few other countries to the south are becoming attractive options too.

Why are people leaving California

Scott tells Nick that there’s no shortage of reasons people want to leave California.  Scott has lived in California for 35 years, from the north to the south, in many cities, so he knows the state very well.  Although he loves California – the beaches, mountains, and other features, there were too many things that happened there that turned him and his wife off to living there any longer.  So, they moved to Arizona, just outside of Phoenix.

As he mentions first, people were originally leaving California after they retired.  He says that there are many retirees wanting to move somewhere else.  In fact, that made up the majority of the reason people have been leaving California.  Lately, the cost of living and state taxes have been a rapidly growing reason.  And now, the state regulations and policies have been driving people out of the state as well – business has become difficult there.
