Not being very famous for diving and snorkeling, Cabo San Lucas does deliver – you just need to know where to dive. That’s the primary explanation for its lack of fame – many popular coastal locations are either featureless underwater or difficult and dangerous to swim. So to truly get your interest in Cabo diving, let’s look at some amazing dive spots that are breathtaking.
Prior to presenting these breathtaking dive spots in Cabo San Lucas, let’s look at what resides underwater within the spectacular Sea of Cortez…
The biodiversity of the Sea of Cortez
To begin, the Sea of Cortez is the most biologically diverse body of water on Earth, as it was once called “The World’s Aquarium” by Jacque Cousteau himself, for its amazing biodiversity, As such, it supports over 900 varieties of fish. Also, it supports more than 2,000 species of marine invertebrates. On top of that, the Sea of Cortez is home to many endemic species, which are creatures that only exist there and nowhere else.
Diving in Cabo San Lucas, you’ll always find many types of sea creatures. The largest on the list are the migratory whales, which include California gray whales, humpback whales, and orcas or killer whales. Also, you’ll find whale shark, which are peaceful giants providing the diving experience of your life.
Dive at Land’s End’s North Wall
As the name suggests, Land’s End lies at the tip of Cabo San Lucas. Its unique geographical location is when the Sea of Cortez meets the Pacific Ocean. This nutrient-rich environment means that the site is home to stunning marine life and corals.
Relatively close to the Cabo San Lucas marina, the North Wall is a well-protected site. This amazing site is more often than not the first Cabo San Lucas diving location for most divers. The site varies in depth from 20 ft/6 m to 100ft/30m, making it an ideal site for every level of diver. So whether you’re a novice or experienced, this place will truly amaze you.
When you dive along the North Wall, much smaller marine life can hide in the rocks and swim around. Looking at the rocky reef, you can encounter slipper lobsters, moray eels, scorpionfish, and even sea horses lurking on the rocks. Bigger creatures are also around, and you can encounter porcupine fish, pufferfish, guitarfish, and the occasional sleeping whitetip reef sharks.
This diving spot begins on a sandy slope that drops to around 25F/7.5m, where the rock wall first reveals itself. This wall is primarily made up of a medium and large boulders and provides a home and shelter for a dizzying array of marine life and critters. Due to its proximity to the marina, the site is relatively sheltered, making diving conditions here ideal. The North Wall has minimal currents, and visibility is good year-round.
Uncover the snorkeling capital of Cabo: Pelican Rock
Diving within the shallow parts of Pelican Rock, you’ll find sea bass, moray eels, and porcupine fish. Along the reef, see an octopus or two, sea lugs, and nudibranchs that hide within the reef itself. Then, see the large schools of sardines often found around the top of Pelican Rock.
Pelican Rock is suitable for divers of every experience level. Diving instructors usually use the Pelican Rock shallows to train beginners. Then, experienced divers get to explore the deeper areas of Pelican Rock. After passing the sandy slope that gently slopes down about 70ft/21m, you arrive at the start of the wall, which drops down an impressive 500ft/152m.
Enjoy diving at Cabo Pulmo National Park
When you dive at Cabo Pulmo National Park, you’ll be among over 6,000 documented species of marine life. When in the water, you’ll encounter everything from corals’ heads and sand eels to groupers, turtles, and reef sharks. Whether you love to see larger species or enjoy marine macro life, Cabo Pulmo National Park is filled with all of it to see for yourself.
Since this amazing place is a UNESCO World Heritage Site, Cabo Pulmo National Park is home to one of the best diving experiences imaginable in Cabo San Lucas. To begin, this amazing place is home to North America’s most northern reef. Although it was once endangered, Cabo Pulmo National Park is now home to abundant marine life among now healthy corals.
