Being host to unique flora and fauna diversity, including some rare endemic and endangered species, the Vizcaino Biosphere Reserve has much vegetation throughout the area. As such, this is a nest of ecological biodiversity, rare to find anywhere else.
Now, read on to uncover this rare eco-sanctuary in Mexico.
The Vizcaino Biosphere Reserve revealed
The Vizcaino Biosphere Reserve became a Biosphere Reserve in 1988. And since 1993, the Vizcaino whale sanctuary, near the Vizcaino Biosphere Reserve, became part of the World Heritage by UNESCO (United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization).
It is a protected ecosystem just north of Cabo. And with more than two-million acres, this reserve is one of the most extensive natural reserves in the world. And, there’s no wonder why it became such an important spot for locals and travelers from around the world.
This place covers a wide variety of ecosystems, from a combination of one of the driest deserts, lagoons and oak forests. Also, its fauna is very ample and interesting.
So from the hundreds of gray whales that show up every winter to mate and give birth to the wide variety of exotic birds like the osprey eagle, the collar goose, the swallow duck, and the red heron, the Vizcaino Biosphere Reserve has it all.
Discover what to see there
While you’re here, don’t miss the endangered species such as the golden eagle and the peregrine falcon. Also, see other land animals such as the white-tailed antelope and the bighorn sheep. Also, find other species like foxes, lynx, and pumas.
Among the most representative species of flora are different kinds of palm trees. See the white palm, which is endemic to the Baja peninsula. There’s also the Mexican fan palm, also endemic to this region. Finally, there are multiple species of the Yucca plant.
If you’re a flora observer, this variety of species will stand out on this beautiful peninsula. Among the main potential threats is illegal hunting, over-exploitation of species, expansion of the agriculture, extensive livestock, pollution, illegal wildlife trafficking, and mining.
The Vizcaino Whale Sanctuary will amaze you
This whale sanctuary is an ideal place for whales to give birth. As such, they mate there too. But not only whales, see some sea lions, sea turtles and other mammals from the area. Located in the central part of the Baja California peninsula, this sanctuary contains exceptionally interesting ecosystems.
The Vizcaino Biosphere Reserve is located right on the Pacific side of Baja. And since it functions as a sanctuary for the reproduction of gray whales, year-after-year, they arrive in the region to mate and to give birth. This is before they return to the cold waters of Alaska. The sanctuary is located north of the reserve, where many aquatic ecosystems are found.
In order to access this region, just take the Transpeninsular Highway number one. It runs through the Baja Peninsula from north to south. And, don’t hesitate and get closer to nature with this incredible experience of visiting the The Vizcaino Biosphere Reserve along the way.
