For quite some time, his guest was the only female to join the downhill mountain biking community. But soon after, starting in 2013, she won the women’s national champion title. To reveal her name, it’s Lorena Dromundo. She is from the southern Mexico City town of Ajusco.
Starting at only 12 years old, Lorena started competing. Then, just one year later, she participated in her first national competition. During the video, Lorena lets Nick know what it’s like to compete in downhill mountain biking. After that, she reveals what she’s gone through in order to make it to the top. Back when Lorena was only 11, she started competing on horses. Explaining to Nick, she says that she jumped horses and raced horses too. As you’ll see, she’s a natural competitor. Next, she realized how much she loved bikes over horses. So after some exploration, she discovered downhill mountain biking. After that, the rest was history!

First, Lorena talks about how her love for the sport is front-and-center. Then, she talks about how much of a sacrifice it takes to dedicate yourself to a sport like she has. According to Lorena, downhill mountain biking wasn’t very well known in Mexico. That means, she’s been with it while it has grown leaps and bounds where today, downhill mountain biking is very popular throughout Mexico.
At the beginning of the video, Nick tells Lorena that he loves mountain biking. He’s not a professional, but does love the sport and he really understands what Lorena is describing. After a moment, he asks her what it means to be a downhill mountain biker. Her answer is both dramatic and technical – she explains the details in the video. And as you’ll see, Nick is surprised by the toll downhill mountain biking takes her, both physically and mentally.
The name of the game: Crashes and injuries
Lorena mentions to Nick that she has never broken a bone competing. But, she did crash once causing her liver to tear in half. See just how priceless the look on Nick’s face becomes when she says that. Next, she tells Nick that getting knocked un-conscience is almost a weekly event. At the speeds they cruise down the mountains, along bumpy paths, wipe-outs must be very rough indeed. Apparently, the more you crash, the better you get – makes sense.
